More information has been released concerning the relationship between a former congressional candidate for Georgia's District 10 and a 41-year-old Aiken man found shot to death in his home on Old Powderhouse Road earlier this week.
Kellie Lynn Collins, 30, turned herself in to the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office in Georgia on Wednesday after the Aiken County Sheriff's Office obtained warrants against her for murder and grand larceny. Those charges are connected to the murder of Curt Jason Cain, whose body was discovered by the residential manager of his apartment on Tuesday, according to the report.
Cain is believed to have died on Aug. 4 from a gunshot wound and blood loss, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
Carlton said Friday he has been trying to find Cain's next of kin and whether he was married to Collins. McDuffie County Sheriff's deputies spoke with Collins at the Georgia jail and she confirmed to them she and Cain were married, but she would not specify where they were married.
There is no record of them being married in Aiken County, he said.
However, there are records showing Cain was listed as treasurer for Collins' 2018 official Political Action Committee when she was running as a Democratic candidate for the U.S. House to represent the 10th Congressional District in Georgia in the 2018 election, according to the website opensecrets.org.
Investigators with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office have not confirmed whether they found Cain's vehicle, a blue Subaru Legacy, which was missing from his residence when they found his body.
The former Georgia congressional candidate accused of shooting and killing an Aiken man has been booked into the Aiken County detention center.
It has been confirmed Cain was employed by Swiss Krono in Barnwell for approximately 14 years, and his employers confirmed he was a "jack-of-all-trades" and worked in maintenance, Carlton said.
He was also close to finishing his MBA at USC Aiken, said USC Aiken Chancellor Dr. Sandra Jordan on Thursday.
There are still many mysteries surrounding this case that need to be answered.
Collins continues to be held at the McDuffie County jail until she is extradited to Aiken County, where she will be formally charged with Cain's murder.
