The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting incident after a 66-year-old Aiken man claimed he accidentally shot his roommate outside of their Barway Drive home this week.

According to a police report, deputies responded to Aiken Regional Medical Centers around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, where the man said he was inside his house and saw a man climb over his fence, prompting him to get his shotgun.

The man told police he went outside yelling at the man to stop, and when the man did not stop, he fired one shot, the report said.

Upon closer inspection, the man said he realized he had shot his 49-year-old roommate by mistake, then rushed the roommate to the hospital, police reported.

Deputies reported they were unable to get a statement from the victim due his medical condition.

No arrest has been made at this time.
