The Viola family, of Aiken, pose with actress Jessica Biel on set of "The Sinner."

USA Network's crime thriller "The Sinner," which has ties to South Carolina, has picked up Golden Globe nominations.

The show, starring Jessica Biel, was shot in Summerville (near Charleston) and featured twin toddlers, Connor and Jackson Viola, of Aiken.

The eight-episode close-ended series follows a young mother played by Biel, "who, when overcome by an inexplicable fit of rage, commits a startling act of violence and to her horror has no idea why," the network's website says.

The series aired in August.

Connor and Jackson, 2 at the time, split eight-hour workdays to portray Biel's son.

"The Sinner" has been nominated for "Best TV movie or limited series," and Biel also was nominated as "Best actress in a TV movie or limited series"

Both apparently came as a shock to Biel as well as some entertainment outlets.

Vanity Fair has called "The Sinner," the Globes' "biggest TV surprise" in an article published Monday.

Biel, also executive producer of the project, told Entertainment Weekly she was "shocked" by the news

But she went on to call the nominations "awesome," and the series something she and her partner, Michelle Purple, "are so proud of and we worked so hard on."
