Robert Collins Company moved its main office in 121 Newberry St. SW in November.

A Barnwell business has moved its main office to Aiken, and the Design Review Board approved a new window sign for its downtown location.

Robert Collins Company moved its main office to 121 Newberry St. S.W. in November, Chief Financial Officer Chrissy Still said Tuesday evening.

The company will maintain its shop in Barnwell according to its website.

Robert Collins Company was established in 1958.

The company performs large-scale mining, quarry-stripping and beach renourishment in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida, Still continued.

"We're well known on the coast," she said.

Still said she and the owner of the company both live in Aiken and wanted to "extend this way" so they moved into the space.

The location had been unoccupied for around a year. The previous tenant, Joe Harrison's State Farm office, moved to the city's Southside.

Aiken Alley Holdings LLC owns the building. Harrison sold the building to Aiken Alley Holdings for $675,000 according to Aiken County property tax records.

Still spoke about the company's main office relocation to the Aiken Design Review Board

The company asked the board to approve a new window sign for the office.

Normally, window signs are approved administratively by the board's chair.

However, previous Design Review Board Chairman McDonald Law wanted the board to weigh in because the sign plan calls for coverage of a whole window which is generally not permitted unless the board grants an exception, Board Secretary Rebekah Seymour said.

The sign plan calls for one window to be covered by a picture of an excavator.

Still said the window would be covered to screen an office.

She added customers of an insurance agency formerly located in the building stop by to make payments and she hoped the excavator would let them know they can't make payments there.

The board voted 6-0 to approve the request.

Law made the motion to approve the request. Board member Ahmad Mickell seconded the motion.

The Design Review Board also approved requests:

• to install new gutters, flashing and replace several windows at 702 Colleton Ave. SE;

• for various alterations at 502 Highland Park Terrace S.W.; and

• to demolish a garage located at 467 Newberry St. S.W
