Game Summary: Senior A.J. Conklin welcomed visiting Brookland-Cayce to Midland Valley with a 83-yard touchdown return on the opening kick. The Mustangs wouldn't fall behind for the remaining 47 minutes and 50 seconds. With the absence of running back Jesse Scott, senior Raphael Griffin stepped into the star role at wide receiver, with a little help from Cameron Epting. Griffin made his first trip to the end zone on a 66-yard reception, giving the Mustangs a 14-7 lead early in the second. But just one minute and three plays later, the duo hooked up once more, this time on a 34-yard bomb on the strong side to go up 21-7. The Bearcats struck again before half with a 17-yard blast up the gut by Demetrius Jackson to keep the score respectable going into the break. Midland Valley used a trio of running backs to replace Scott in the second half, wearing down the defense and running out the clock. With just four minutes remaining, Epting found Griffin yet again for a 21 yard touchdown, the tandem's third connection of the evening. Key Performances: A.J. Conklin and Cam Epting each had stellar performances in Friday night's game, but the game ball would have to go to senior Raphael Griffin in the last home game of his high school career. Griffin pulled in six receptions for 149 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Mustangs to victory, while making multiple plays on defense as well. The game was over when: With Brookland-Cayce driving in the third quarter, Conklin crushed the hopes of the visitors with an interception in the end zone, when a touchdown would have tied the game. The Bearcats would not threaten the home defense the rest of the game. What they are saying: Midland Valley Head Coach Rick Knight: "The seniors really stepped up. A.J. Conklin started us off with the return for a touchdown, and Raphael Griffin had three touchdown catches. Clayte Steelman, one of the area leaders in tackles, also had a good evening. (Against Strom Thurmond), we're going to have to play our best and hope that a lot of things go our way. They're a very good football team, and it's going to be a big challenge for us." What this means: Midland Valley improves to 4-5, while Brookland-Cayce falls to 0-9. Game Statistics: B-C 0 14 0 0 -- 14 MV 7 14 7 7 -- 35 Scoring Summary MV- A.J.
