Twelve Aiken gymnastics teams composed of 78 gymnasts traveled to the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center to participate in the Gamecock Invitational Jan. 14-16. The meet was hosted by Lake Murray Gymnastics and was open to both boys and girls. The Aiken Gym girls dedicated their efforts at this meet to honoring the memory of Brenda Jett Adams, a booster club member and mother who was killed just one week earlier by a drunken driver. Girls had embroidered crosses on their competition leotards and wore matching hair ribbons. The Aiken gymnasts cleaned up, capturing six first-place team trophies, one second-place team trophy and one fourth-place team trophy. Their other four teams were not permitted to earn trophies, either because of having less than three gymnasts or South Carolina rules that do not permit teams from entry levels two and three to be in competition. Individuals grabbing first place overall in their age/team divisions included: Sarah Mell, Bronze (BR) (36.675), Mary Margaret Seawell, BR (36.0), Lienna Crowder, BR (36.2), Chloe Kaplan, Silver (SV) (35.7), Victoria Kiefer, Gold (G) (36.05), OIivia Stringfield, G (36.725), Madison Doolittle, Platinum (PL) (35.05), Mackenzie Bostick, PL (36.825), Victoria Colon LaBorde, Level 2 (L2) (34.75) Simone Wiatrak, L3 (36.65), Brittany Heath, L7 (37.175), Ciera Carter, L7 (37.45), Lizzy Varnadore, L8 (36.95), India Anderson, L9 (35.7), and Erica McClain, L10 (36.70). The Gamecock mascot, Cocky, was on hand and not only gave out awards but posed for individual photos with hundreds of gymnasts. This was the first time out for Aiken's Level 2 gymnasts, and it is rumored one of the little darlings told Cocky she was a Tiger. Session high scores on beam were Erica McClain (9.225), India Anderson (9.2), Ciera Carter (9.775) and Sarah Mell (9.4). High session scores on uneven bars included Simone Wiatrak (9.35) and Victoria Colon LaBorde (9.3). Aiken had perfected its floor routines and session high scores were Lexi Trumble (9.45), Olivia Stringfield (9.525), Chloe Kaplan (9.575), Kara Keenan (9.3), Lizzy Varnadore (9.475), Avery Arico (9.6) and Elizabeth Colon LaBorde (9.35). Ciera Carter, Lizzy Varnadore, Erica McClain, Simone Wiatrak, Olivia Stringfield, Sarah Mell and Mackenzie Bostick also had the highest all-around scores in their respective sessions and received a free leotard created especially for the Gamecock Invitational.
