Funeral services for Mr. John Odell Pearson will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at 2 p.m. at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. S.W., Aiken. Entombment with military honors will follow at Southlawn Cemetery & Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial donations may be directed to Palmetto Hook A Kid On Golf, 275 Berrie Road, Aiken, SC 29801. Mr. Pearson, 96, of Aiken, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at his residence. A son of the late Walter Gray Pearson and Tessie Loftis Pearson, he was born in Greenville County and had lived in Columbia before moving to Aiken in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was awarded a Silver Service Star and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. Before retiring in the late 1970s with 33 years of service, he worked as a textile engraver at United Merchants, Clearwater. John was most known, however, as an avid golfer and record holder at the Palmetto Golf Club, Aiken. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Jeanette Lawson Pearson, who died in 2007. He is survived by three sisters, Janet Schwing of Rock Hill, Katherine Ashmore of Piedmont and Peggy Griffin of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including area residents Odell Ashmore of Spartanburg and Milton Lawson and Benjamin Lawson, both of Appling, Ga.
