CPO LaVerne “Mike” Koon

AIKEN, SC – CPO United States Navy Retried, LaVerne “Mike” Koon, 88, of Aiken, SC, entered into rest on Monday, July 15th, 2013, following a brief illness.
Born in Aiken County, SC, he was a son of the late Luther and Cora Walker Koon of Burnettown, SC.
A veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, he proudly served his country in the Medical Corps of the United States Navy retiring after over thirty years of service, earning the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
He was extremely patriotic and loved his country more than life. He was a Mason, member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marine Corps Relief Society, Fisher House Foundation and was a supporter of many military organizations.
In addition to his parents, family members include a sister, Hazel (Chuck) Tatman, Aiken, SC; nieces, Cheryl (David) Scarborough, Raleigh, NC and Tricia (Todd) Beiers, Lexington, SC; great-nieces, Abby Scarborough, Emily and Jenna Grace Beiers; great-nephews, Joshua Scarborough and Charlie and Nicholas Beiers and his loving friend, Helen Alvord, Sterling, VA.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, July 18th, 2013, at 2 o’clock in the chapel of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Aiken, SC, with the Rev. Dr. Ray Litz officiating.
Musical selections will be provided by Ms. Diane Miniard and Mr. David Salter. Interment with full military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Graniteville, SC.
Serving as pallbearers will be Nicholas Beiers, Todd Beiers, Larry Hester, Vaughn Hester, David Scarborough and Charlie “Chet” Eugene Tyler, IV.
It has been requested by the family that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Fisher House Foundation, 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420 Rockville, MD 20852 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101.
Friends will be greeted by the family on Thursday, July 18th, 2013, from 1 o’clock until the time of service in the chapel of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Aiken, SC.
