Strom Thurmond student Lily Mann is pictured donating blood to the Shepeard Community Blood Center. The center is in "urgent" need of Type O positive blood, platelet and plasma donors.

After a thorough holiday depletion, Shepeard Community Blood Center is asking for donations of blood and plasma for incoming trauma cases.

According to a press release, the CSRA-based blood donation center is in "urgent" need of donations of Type O Positive, platelet and plasma donors.

People with Type O Negative blood are also encouraged to donate, as their blood can be accepted by patients of all blood types.

Director of Community Resources Ashley Whitaker said in an email donors had rallied recently to help replenish some of their blood supply, but donations were still needed.

"At this time, we have an urgent need for all donors with Type B Negative blood," Whitaker said.

Whitaker added that donors can come back every 56 days to donate more blood.

Platelets are clotting components in the blood that only have a five-day shelf life, so Shepeard Community Blood Center locations are in constant need of donations. They are especially in need of male donors who are not using blood thinners, such as aspirin.

To donate blood at Shepeard Community Blood Center, bring a photo ID or a Shepeard donor card to the Aiken center at 353 Fabian Drive. Donors must be at least 17 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds. Donors age 16 donate with written parental consent.

The Aiken center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
