S.C. mom shares story of sons' deaths with Winfrey

Interviewed by Oprah: Shaquan Duley wipes away tears during her plea hearing at the Orangeburg County Courthouse on March 16 in Orangeburg, SC. Duley pleaded guilty to killing her two young sons by suffocating them and putting their bodies into a car, letting it roll into a river.

COLUMBIA -- A South Carolina mother who admitted suffocating her two young sons, then putting their bodies in a river, has shared her story with Oprah Winfrey in a tearful interview set to air next week. In clips released Thursday to The Associated Press, Winfrey asks Shaquan Duley what was going through her mind after she smothered her older son, 2-year-old Devean. "Devean takes his last breath. He doesn't fight any more. You've done it," Winfrey says to Duley, who is handcuffed and clad in an orange jail uniform. "Do you think then, 'I have to kill my other son'? Do you think, 'I have to take him, too'?" Duley nods slowly in response. Winfrey traveled to the Orangeburg County jail last week to speak with Duley, who faces a possible life sentence when she is sentenced today. Just days before the visit, the 30-year-old mother had pleaded guilty to two counts of murder, telling a judge she still loves her sons. "I ask God every day just to allow me to keep the memory ... that I have of them," Duley told the judge. "In spite of whatever I've gone through, I still have hope and joy in my heart that one day I will see them again." Duley has been in jail since her arrest in the deaths of Devean and his brother, 18-month-old Ja'van. Divers pulled the boys' bodies from the North Edisto River on Aug. 16, 2010. Duley initially told police she fell asleep at the wheel before the car went into the river about 40 miles south of Columbia, but authorities questioned her story after finding no signs of a crash. Police said Duley told them that, after being badgered by her sister and mother about her failings as a parent, Duley fled with her sons to a motel, where she held her hands over the boys' mouths. Her attorney has said she tried to kill herself with an overdose of headache medication and slashed her wrists with a box cutter at the hotel. She wanted to die inside the car with her sons before changing her mind and climbing out, he said. Investigators said Duley strapped the boys' bodies into their car seats, drove 10 miles to a boat ramp, and watched as the car rolled into the water. In another clip, Duley cries as Winfrey asks what was running through her mind after the deaths. "So you now just taken, with your own hands, and suffocated your 2-year-old and your 18-month-old. And what do you do with yourself in that moment when you realize that that is what you have just done?" Winfrey asks. "Who are you, in that moment when you realize that you have just killed the two boys that you say you love more than life?" The interview airs at 9 p.m. Sunday as part of "Oprah's Next Chapter" on the Oprah Winfrey Network. ------ Kinnard can be reached at http://twitter.com/MegKinnardAP
