YORK (AP) -- The pipes at the mobile home in York where Carl Burriss lives no longer leak, but the Vietnam veteran still has no running water. The Herald of Rock Hill reported that the 62-year-old Burriss has a water bill of about $600 because of leaky pipes. Since January, he has lugged jugs of water to his home. Other veterans who heard of his trouble dug in his yard to uncover the leaky pipes. A drilling company repaired the pipes for free last week. Joe Medlin is the York County Veterans Service Officer and an Iraq combat veteran who first heard of Burriss' plight and helped dig up the yard. He's now raising money to pay the water bill. Burriss said he's blessed to have such friends.
