By TONY BAUGHMAN Staff writer The gavel is expected to fall tonight on what auctioneer and real estate agent Bill Dearman says is a "growing trend" in selling property. ERA Real Estate One will have 10 residential and commercial properties on the block during a live real estate auction at Café Monet inside Southside Gallery on Silver Bluff Road. Social hour and bidder registration begins at 6 p.m., with the auction starting at 7. "I have followed the auction market in Aiken since 1979," Dearman said. "I've seen land sold at auction around the county. I've seen some commercial properties sold at auction, but I have never seen where you had an auction where multiple pieces of residential property were offered. It's a real growing trend throughout America, but it has not quite made it to this part of the Southeast yet." Among the properties offered are land along Good Springs Road near Vaucluse and vacation property on Lake Murray near Columbia, along with single-family homes and investment rental properties. Dearman is able to conduct the auction himself because he holds two licenses, one as auctioneer and another as a real estate agent. Sally Brodie, owner of ERA Real Estate One, is the broker-in-charge. "What we're doing is trying to establish an additional service and condition the market in Aiken to accept auction as a legitimate marketing tool," Dearman said. "Auctioning real estate will never take the place of the conventional methods of selling real estate, but it is right for a certain niche of property." Southside Gallery is located at 752 Silver Bluff Road in the Centre South shopping center.
