Staff photo by Bill Bengtson / Aiken Mayor Fred Cavanaugh and his wife, Lee,shared the spotlight Sunday afternoon in Aiken’s municipal building, in the midst of a farewell reception marking the mayor’s last full day in office, as he prepared to retire the next day (Nov. 23), to make way for his successor, businessman Rick Osbon. The mayor, who did not run for re-election this year, joined Aiken City Council in 1985 and was first elected mayor in 1991. At the reception, he received the Order of the Silver Crescent from S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley; resolutions from the S.C. Senate and House of Representatives; a certificate of appreciation from Aiken Department of Public Safety; and gifts from municipal employees and the Character Comes First in Aiken program. He is an Air Force veteran and a retiree from the Savannah River Site.
