The sidewalks outside of Lionel Smith Ltd. may have looked a bit more colorful than usual lately.
The downtown clothing business concluded its Chalk it Up campaign on Friday, marking the end of a two-week long fundraiser for Children's Place Inc.
During the campaign, passersby were encouraged to write messages to their fathers or father figures in their lives in honor of Father's Day. For each message written on the sidewalk, Lionel Smith would donate $5 to Children's Place.
"We started this campaign last year," said Danny Minolfo, co-owner of Lionel Smith. "It's been a nice opportunity for people to come downtown and decorate the sidewalk and also to honor their dad for Father's Day."
Children's Place is a nonprofit whose mission is to "protect, heal, and strengthen children and families from the impact of trauma in their lives," according to the organization's website.
Minolfo said the business donates a minimum of $500 to Children's Place during the campaign, regardless of how many messages are left on the sidewalk.
"We're honored to work with Children's Place and donate the money to them," Minolfo said.
Both Minolfo and his business partner, Lionel Smith co-owner Van Smith, said they have a special connection to Father's Day because of the role father figures played in their lives.
"A father figure is very important in the lives of these children, and in everybody's lives," Smith said.
Minolfo and Smith presented a $500 check to Children's Place representatives on Friday afternoon.
"We really appreciate the community," said Children's Place Executive Director Peggy Ford. "We wouldn't be here without this community. For Lionel Smith to Chalk it Up for Dads is real important to us, because mothers and fathers are really important in children's lives. To have this event that highlights fathers is really important."
