Six thousand freshly baked doughnuts will be ready for customers when Dunkin' Donuts opens Wednesday. The popular purveyor of coffee and doughnuts will open its doors to Aiken after roughly six months of construction. The 2,200-square-foot site is located on Richland Avenue across from Wal-Mart, next to the BP gas station. A select group of people piled into Dunkin' Donuts Monday for a VIP Preview Party where the full menu was available for sampling. The aromas of brewing coffee and baking doughnuts hit customers as they walked in the door. The drive-through was up and running as well. Joe Bartee, who sipped on an iced coffee, said he sure was happy to see a Dunkin' Donuts in Aiken. "I am a coffee and doughnut person," he said. "I think they'll do well." Franchise co-owner Charlie Hartz said Richland Avenue is the perfect location for the first shop with such closeness to USC Aiken and Aiken Regional Medical Centers. "We're very excited," Hartz said. When they signed the franchise agreement, Hartz and his wife, Kitsie, agreed to bring five Dunkin' Donuts over five years to Aiken and surrounding areas. He said the next location to open will either be on Whiskey Road or in North Augusta. Bartee liked the thought of Whiskey Road. "You can't go wrong on that side of town," he said. Dunkin' Donuts offers a variety of coffees, hot chocolate and flavored teas. Doughnut flavors include chocolate frosted cake, bow tie, apple and spice, Bavarian cream, glazed and old fashioned cake and more. The menu also features bagels and breakfast and lunch sandwiches, like its turkey, cheese and bacon flatbread sandwich. Dunkin' Donuts will be open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week. According to its website, Dunkin' Donuts is the world's largest coffee and baked goods provider, serving more than 3 million customers a day.
