A portion of the wall surrounding the Aiken County Historical Museum that was destroyed by an alleged drunken driver this week will have to be rebuilt, and officials do not yet have a cost estimate for the repairs.

Elliott Levy, executive director of the museum, said it is not known whether or not the driver, 19-year-old Lindsey Nicole Boyd, has insurance or if the County has insurance on the wall.

Boyd allegedly drove her Chevrolet Trailblazer through the wall at the intersection of Laurens Street and South Boundary Avenue about 12:20 a.m. on Wednesday, according to an Aiken Public Safety report.

Investigators determined Boyd was driving south on Laurens Street toward South Boundary Avenue, and while attempting to make a left turn onto South Boundaery, her vehicle traveled into the oncoming traffic lane on Laurens Street and then South Boundary, according to the report. The car traveled across South Boundary, exited the roadway and struck the wall.

“It’s going to have to be rebuilt,” Levy said, adding that a cost estimate for the repairs was not available. “We want to follow the same exact footprint that was there. The problem is, you repair that portion of the wall, you also have to repaint the whole wall, because otherwise it looks like a patch job.”

A small house on the museum’s property was built around 1860, and Banksia, the Winter Colony mansion that houses the museum, was built in the 1930s. Levy said the brick serpentine wall was built around the same time as the mansion.

“This kind of thing is taken out of my hands,” he said. “Building and maintenance and the engineering department decide what will happen and who will do the work.”

According to the report, Boyd and the other occupants in the vehicle had been drinking prior to the crash. Boyd was charged with DUI, no proof of insurance and minor in possession of alcohol.
