By HALEY HUGHES, Staff writer Last year, an 8-year-old made it to the final table at the Fermata Club's inaugural Monopoly tournament. Another surprise like that could sweep the event this year in the historic club's second tournament scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 5. The cost to register is $25. Officially sanctioned by toymaker giant Hasbro, event registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., player check-in at 9:30 a.m. and play will begin at 10 a.m. All ages are welcome to play and players don't have to be a Monopoly geniuses to participate; they just need to know the basics. "As long as you understand the rules, you can play," said tournament organizer Chuck Foster. There will be four to six players per table in a timed 90 minute game. When time runs out, the player with the largest bank (money and property) will move on to the next round. "The top six money players will play in a final round," Foster said. Whoever has the largest bank once time ends at the final table will be the champion. Foster said players are coming from other surrounding areas such as Atlanta and Charlotte. The public is welcome at Fermata during the tournament to watch. "We'd love to have as many people as possible," Foster said. "It's a good time." When asked if there is one winning strategy to the classic trading board game, Foster laughed. Some people will start playing conservatively and others will snatch up every single piece of property they land on. "You've got to make some decisions early on what properties you want," he said. Registration prior to the tournament is encouraged, but registration on the day of the tournament will be accepted. To register, or for more information, contact Foster at (803) 215-7630 or at Registration by e-mail is preferred.
