The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division charged a Trenton woman Wednesday in connection to an investigation of embezzlement that occurred in the Town of Johnston in Edgefield County.
Angel Monique Miles, 36, is charged with embezzlement, value less than $10,000, according to jail records.
The Town of Johnston discovered thousands of dollars missing and requested an investigation be done by SLED.
Miles was employed as the town clerk in Johnston, performing various administrative and financial duties, according to SLED.
SLED's investigation led agents to believe she had diverted funds from a town account into a personal account, according to the release.
On or before Oct. 23, 2018, law enforcement believes Miles took cash paid into the Town of Johnston Business License fund and Hospitality Tax fund, the release states.
Miles reportedly took approximately $4,000 from the town funds for her personal use, according to the arrest warrant.
SLED agents gathered enough evidence against Miles to charge her by using documents from the Town of Johnston, witness statements and an interview with Miles where she admits to the crime, the warrant states.
She was arrested Wednesday and taken to the Edgefield County Detention Center.
The case will be prosecuted by the Eleventh Circuit Solicitor's Office.
