Damage from flooding causes 17 layoffs at Cypress Gardens

MONCKS CORNER — The impact of last month’s historic rains in South Carolina is still being felt as 17 workers at Cypress Gardens in Berkeley County are out of work.

The county tells local media that the park has closed because of flood damage and is not expected to reopen until next year.

Because no revenue is coming in from admissions and special events, the county has had to lay off 10 temporary and seven full-time workers. Eight workers remain on the job to take care of the park and its plants and animals.

Moviegoers may recall the park northwest of Charleston for scenes filmed there in the movie “The Patriot.” The park was the backdrop of the hideout used by patriot troops led by the character played by Mel Gibson.
