Editor’s note: The Aiken Standard will look at five road improvement projects slated by the South Carolina Department of Transportation to begin this month. This is the second in a five-part series, focusing today on East Buena Vista Avenue/Atomic Road.

Approved in September 2007, the East Buena Vista Avenue/Atomic Road (S.C. 125) corridor project covers a 1.3-mile stretch of road from Victoria Lane to Edgefield Road in North Augusta.

During the Nov. 5 meeting of the subcommittee of the Augusta Regional Transportation Study, Michele Shepherd, a program manager with the S.C. Department of Transportation, provided an update regarding five ongoing road improvement projects in Aiken County, including East Buena Vista/Atomic Road.

Bidding opened on the $6.55 million improvement project on Nov. 10, with an estimated completion date of fall 2017, according to Shepherd.

“Preliminary engineering design work began in summer 2005, and was completed earlier this fall,” Shepherd said. “Right-of-way acquisition began in fall 2013 and also was completed earlier this fall.

The scope of the project includes improvement of the corridor along East Buena Vista/Atomic Road, extending approximately 1.5 miles along Georgia Avenue to Old Edgefield Road, and will include restriping and widening the road corridor, as well as the installation of bicycle and pedestrian accommodations throughout portions of the corridor in North Augusta, according to Shepherd.

“Construction bidding began this month on the project with an estimated completion date of (fall 2017),” she said. “Planned improvements include a planted median along East Buena Vista Avenue, which has been revised to include single median breaks to provide full access for future developments along the corridor.”

The last of the design phase has been completed and right-of-way along the projected corridor area was cleared for bidding.

“All 54 right-of-way tracts have been cleared for bidding, with some outstanding tracts of property currently being finalized,” Shepherd said.
