Smith graduates basic training 

U.S. Air Force Airman Daniel R. Smith Jr. graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Smith is the son of Denise S. and Daniel R. Smith of Aiken.

He is a 2017 graduate of Midland Valley High School, Graniteville.

Franklin honored by Aiken Rotary

The Aiken Sunrise Rotary Club named University of South Carolina Aiken psychology major, Nikia Franklin, its Student of the Month for January 2019.

The Columbia, S.C., native is also minoring in women and gender studies. Ultimately, Franklin hopes to earn her doctorate degree.

“My professional goal is to become an African-American studies professor with a focus in psychology,” she said.

Franklin, who attended W.J. Keenan High School, graduates from USC Aiken in May.

During her time on campus, she has been involved as a student leader and in a variety of organizations.

“I chose [USC Aiken] because of its close, family atmosphere and its numerous opportunities for me to grow as a student and leader,” Franklin said.

CNTA names new board members 

Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness has elected new board members. The 2019-2020 board members are Dr. Jeffrey S. Allender, Karl G. Lutterloh, Matthew McCoy, Wayne Rickman and Lauryn Jamison.

CNTA is an Aiken-based charitable educational organization dedicated to providing factual information about nuclear topics and educating the public on nuclear issues.
