Vicky Durden recently retired from the Aiken County Public School District with more than 30 years of service. Durden was the secretary for the Aiken County School Board for 16 years.

With a combined total of 1,354 years of service to the field of education, 55 Aiken County Public Schools' employees were honored and celebrated at a retirement dinner held May 20 at Newberry Hall.

Among the retirees were Adult Education Director Pat Keating and Oakwood-Windsor Elementary Principal Lynne Shrader, with 30 and 41 years of service to K-12 students, respectively. Shrader retired with the greatest number of years dedicated to education of all retirees for the 2018-19 school year, according to a news release from the school district.

Other retirees were Kathy Linton, the East Aiken School of the Arts’ physical education teacher who was a member of the 2015-16 Teacher of the Year Honor Court; long-time secretary to the Aiken County Board of Education Vicky Durden; and school counselor Jane Kaplenski.

In addition to teachers and administrators, the retirees included custodians, secretaries, bus drivers and school food service workers.

“Serving our community in the field of education is a noble calling,” District Superintendent Dr. Sean Alford said in the release. “We are grateful to each of these retirees for their dedication to our students and their families and certainly wish them the absolute best that retirement has to offer.”
