Highlands Latin School, which opened in 2017, is a classical Christian school affiliated with the Highlands Latin School of Louisville, Ky. The curriculum encourages students to master a variety of subjects, think independently, and critically and act virtuously, according to a news release from the school.

The school was specifically created to prepare students for college and life by providing academically challenging coursework, developing soft skills that are required to succeed in college, and encouraging the lifelong pursuit of wisdom and virtue, according to the release.

The school follows a classical curriculum that refines students’ ability to think, analyze and assess situations then clearly and effectively communicate their conclusions both verbally and in writing.

Mathematics, sciences, literature, languages, history and other subjects are systematically presented as interrelated components of knowledge unified along a historical timeline rather than as disparate topics, according to the release.

Classical instruction centers on the spoken and written word rather than visual images, actively engaging the student in learning. The classical model develops not only wisdom but virtue – choosing to do or say what one knows is right – through academic discipline, according to the release.

The school has created a schedule and environment that allows students to develop skills such as organization, planning, timeline management, independent learning, small group learning, communication and self-control. These skills are critical for success in college and are often neglected in the development of students during middle and high school, according to the release.

As students get older, their areas of interest diverge, and they are able to choose and explore their course of study as they progress towards graduation. They can use resources such as college dual-enrollment, live online instructor-led courses and face-to-face live courses.
