Construction is ongoing for the widening and bridge replacement of Interstate 20 near the border of South Carolina and Georgia.
Concerns over the coronavirus continue, but Kyle Collins, a spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Transportation, said construction is still ongoing around the state of Georgia.
The interstate will be widened from four to six lanes between Martintown Road – Exit 1 on the interstate – and the Georgia Welcome Center in Augusta. The bridges over the Savannah River and the Augusta Canal will also be replaced to accommodate the widened roadway. A traffic signal will be placed at Martintown Road and Exit 1.
The Georgia Department of Transportation, which has taken the lead on the project, is using a design-build method, which combines pre-construction and construction work into one project. South Carolina Department of Transportation is also involved in the project, and it is the first bi-state agreement between the two states for a design-build project.
Some lane closures and delays have already occurred along the 1.8 mile project area.
“Both nighttime and daytime temporary single lane closures and shoulder closures can be expected along I-20 for the duration on the project,” Collins said. Traffic shifts can be expected later in the project, he said.
Even though there may be lane and shoulder closures, detours will never be needed, save an emergency situation.
Construction over the next three months will include placing temporary barriers along the roadway, clearing and grubbing right of ways, and installing erosion control measures, according to GDOT. The next few months will also include construction of access roads to the Savannah River and Augusta Canal and construction on the Augusta Canal bridge.
The entire project is planned to be completed by the first quarter of 2022. The contractor is Superior Construction, and the entire project cost is $82.5 million.
Along with the two bridges included in the project, more are being considered for replacement by SCDOT.
The agency has proposed replacing four I-20 bridges in Aiken County: the westbound bridge over Highway 19 (Edgefield Highway), both the eastbound and westbound bridges over Gregory Road, both the eastbound and westbound bridges over the South Edisto River, and the webstound bridge over the North Augusta Greeneway.
