People were able to get up close and personal with a plethora of reptiles, amphibians and plant life this weekend during Science Saturday, an event hosted by the University of Georgia's Savannah River Ecology Lab.

The event, held at South Aiken High School, featured animals such as box turtles, a coyote, a corn snake, a rattle snake and more. Additionally, there were various exhibit tables available for attendees to interact with.

“People can come here and they can get a better appreciation of our animals and plants and learn how to be good stewards for them,” said Katrina Ford, assistant director for outreach and education.

Lab researchers and scientists were present at the event to answer questions, promote environmental awareness and discuss their research.

The event has been on hold for the past four years.

“I'm really excited to be able to have this for our community again and to welcome everybody back so they can see some of the new research that we're doing with the lab,” said Ford. “And also to meet all the fun critters.”

Some exciting research opportunities will soon be in store through SREL for college students who are interested in pursuing ecology or environmental disciplines.
