All aboard for fun! National Train Day, an annual holiday celebrating the impact trains have had on our nation, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at the Aiken Visitors Center and Train Museum.

The event will feature live music, model railroad displays, games, a raffle and trackless train rides around Gyles Park. There also will be a Freight Yard Sale featuring great deals on model train items for railroad enthusiasts, and a free children’s model railroad workshop sponsored by the Aiken Model Railroad Club.

“National Train Day is a great way to have fun and learn about how the railroad shaped our community,” said Sam Ellis, museum coordinator at the Aiken Visitors Center and Train Museum.

Food will be available from Beefed Up!, Chick-fil-A and Flanigan’s Ice Cream. The freshly painted 1918 Illinois Central Pullman car will be open for tours and will feature a collection of railroad artifacts as well as a model railroad with all the bells and whistles also 

Mother Goose also will be donning her conductor’s hat to read a great selection of railroad themed storybooks.

National Train Day would not be possible without support from the Friends of the Aiken Railroad Depot. All proceeds from the gift shop and Freight Yard Sale go to the Friends of the Aiken Railroad Depot.
