Aiken residents may soon see more traffic than normal along Whiskey Road.
A resurfacing project on Dougherty Road will begin May 7, causing traffic delays on Whiskey Road and Silver Bluff Road according to signs placed along the roadways.
Dougherty Road is the main connector between Whiskey Road and Silver Bluff Road on Aiken's Southside.
Resurfacing involves putting a new surfacing an existing roadway to provide a better ride, according to LawInsider.com.
How long the resurfacing project will take is unknown according to an entry on the South Carolina Department of Transportation's project listing.
Portions of Dougherty Road will be resurfaced from its intersection with Silver Bluff Road to Tyler Street according to information provided by S.C. Sen. Tom Young Jr., R-Aiken, earlier this year.
The Aiken County Transportation Committee is funding the project.
Each of South Carolina's 46 counties has a transportation committee tasked with spending funds allocated to it from the state's gasoline tax. The funding is allocated using a formula with three components: population, land area and the amount of rural roads in the state.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation is managing the project.
Aiken County's transportation committee is one of 19 county transportation committees that use the department to manage road improvement projects.
The remaining 27 county transportation committees manage their projects themselves.
Potential detours for Dougherty Road include East Pine Log Road and Ola Hitt Lane/Fabian Drive north of Dougherty and Chime Bell Church Road/Anderson Pond Road south of Dougherty.
