TalkBack for Jan. 4
1/4/2009 12:25 AM
Good people

As an Aikenite (50 years), I remember a close-knit community that cared for each other, no matter what class. Commercial recruiting of people to move to Aiken has had some negative effects. Good neighbors replaced with bad neighbors. Some change for the better with time, some don't change. All the expensive material things you own will never give you the joy of family, friends and a loving heart. And that, my friend, is what a good neighbor possesses. Love thy neighbor and his pets.

Yard waste

Please refer to the City of Aiken Municipal Code Sec. 32-3 - Residential Yard Trash. This code will explain in layman's terms the illegalities of placing yard debris for pickup on a City maintained vehicular right-of-way. If a motorist should damage a vehicle from inadvertently striking yard debris placed in a vehicular right-of-way, such person who placed the debris will be in violation of said code and will be responsible for damages caused. Upon pickup, if the City damages it's right-of-way - which follows along either side of a City-maintained vehicular right-of-way (commonly known as a street) - then the resident who placed the debris has the freedom of making a complaint to the City.

Trashy

Enough with the yard waste; at least it's in its proper place. What disturbs me is the recent litter of beer cans in Hitchcock Woods. I can only assume rednecks have finally made their way to the south side of Aiken. Certainly those who live near and frequent the Woods appreciate its beauty and would never disturb the serene picturesque display of nature it offers. For heaven's sake, have enough decency to drink in the privacy of your own home or in a bar and dispose of your waste in a proper trash receptacle. Better yet, try the novel idea of recycling. You should be ashamed of your actions.

Firework solution

Your statistics indicate "horse people" spend $100 million dollars in Aiken and because of this, they should not have to put up with fireworks. All "horse people" do not share your views. If this is a real problem for you, use your part of the money and return back to where you came from. In consideration of the real wars currently taking place in the world, comparing fireworks to war is absurd and ignorant.

I am American by birth but god liked me so much he placed me in the south so not to have to endure being a stinky yankee and having to spend thousands of dollars to move and be in the south anyway. So i guess it must be true even god likes us best..

How much money have we paid suspended Judge Patrick Sullivan since he was suspended by the SC Supreme Court on September 7, 2007? What a tip!!! Can't believe that we are still paying his salary when he can't even do his job down in New Ellenton!

I really hate to say this because I think you will take as a compliment but you are an idiot. You argue for the sake of arguing. You give Americans a bad name. But then, you don't consider yourself an American, just a southerner.

Exactly.. But a couple things you forgot .. The dopers supplementing their income on the corner selling poison to your kids... How about those brand new cars that are worth more than the apartment it is sitting in front of.. And lets not forget free medical for those baby factory scum so they can create more little burdons on society. None of this is what the system was created for but look at what is has become.

I totally agree with you on everything you said, except two things. 1st, it's N o t a G I V E N that Bruce has a job, 2nd, I've never heard him say one good thing about helping the TRUELY desevering who need our help. He always assumes everyone who write here are immature low lifes with no job &only HIS opinion matters! One last thing....God Bless all the Blood Donors!!!

Comment Title: Bruce's money
I don't agree with everything that Bruce has to say, but given that he does have a J O B and appears to like what he does for a living, I too am in agreement with him about his TAXES going toward the support of LAZY good for nothing low lifes. I am sure he doesn't mind his taxes providing for the truly disabled people and the elderly who are TOO OLD to work. It gripes me in unmentionable places to witness able bodied young people using and abusing the system because they were too lazy to finish school and have too many BABY DADDY kids and the BABY MAMA using the system to take care of not only all of those babys but all of those BABY DADDY too. And that my friend is disgusting. Just drive by the section 8's which are scattered all over town and see whose sitting or standing around with a brown bag in their hand swilling beer and liquor and smoking cigarettes. Take a detour on your way to work in the morning or on your way home tomorrow evening. Don't forget your barf bag because it is definitely sickening to see your tax dollars at work. If the Aiken Mall continues to lose merchants maybe the county will remodel and turn it into section 8 housing.

Comment Title: Money to be Saved
Just look at all the Aiken Sheriff cars that just sit in yards around our county. They are only being used 25% of the time. What a waste of taxpayer's money. Some of that money could be used for litter control, if we made better use of all the sheriff's cars that sit idle for 75% of the time each year.

Comment Title: Bruce & Money
Well, Bruce brags about being wealthy all the time and supporting everyone in South Carolina by himself, so whats that make him?? He's just an amazing man! Works his heart out, gives to the lazy, no goods, and still has time to tell of nothing but his wonderful deeds and share his caring thoughts on here..Bruce, you are everyones hero. You should have been elected President.

Comment Title: You're right Bruce
That's the point I am trying to make. I am sick of the labels the yankees put on Southerners. I am sick of their snobbish ways. And to the horsey people I have this to say....people who HAVE money do not BRAG about how much they spend. The only people who BRAG about what they have can not rub two nickles together, their assets are just that they sit on it.

Comment Title: Litter
Yes, I'm just an egotistical maniac looking for some applause. Please. I'm just trying to make a point by telling how much litter I picked up today. I don't expect a reward for doing it because no one asked me to do it in the first place. If I had wanted praise, I would have did my litter pickup out by the road so everyone could see me rather than in the secluded woods. And I tell you who utilizes the Odell Weeks Center--people from both sides of town with me being one from the North side. It just goes to show that not many people (regardless of class) is raised to have much respect these days and it truly is a shame.

I see littering every day.. And trash comes out of just as many beamers as pickup trucks. And i was judging by the tone of your posts you were fishing for compliments and backpats. Kind of a look at me see what i do kind of thing.

You just proved my point! You care as do I about the asthetics of our fair town. I do not litter. I am however tired of the accusations that all litter is thrown by rednecks. I would be interested to know your take on which side of town most of the patrons who utilize the Odell Weeks facility reside. Litter is thrown by slobs no matter from whence they hail.

Comment Title: Trashing Cops
The worst trash in our town are the corrupt cops who run around trying to arrest anyone they can whenever they can. Look at all the disorderly conduct arrest they make that costs people $1087.50 and result in a 3 year misdemeanor being on their records for no reason.

I will tell you now that I am a Southerner who has never lived nor set foot in the North. I'm just a rare breed of Southerner--one who was actually raised to have respect. I spent the day today picking up litter at Carolina Bay next to Odell Weeks Center and you know how much litter I collected--two bags slap full. So don't jump down my throat calling me anything without knowing the facts. At least I do take a little bit of pride in the town that I live in and am actually willing to do some work to help improve it unlike a lot of people who just want to mess it up. I shouldn't have had to walk out of that place with one bag full, let alone two.

Comment Title: litter a la yankee style
I am sick and tired of all of you high-faux-looting yankees and your drivel about litter in your high-faux-looting sand boxes. Hitchcock Woods was here way before you came to town and many so called "rednecks" enjoyed riding and walking in the sacred green space. I guess the beer cans had a sign reading "dropped by a redneck". Don't you get it the kids of you high-faux-looting people are probably looting your beer fridge and slipping out in the woods to get tanked. Or, some of you high-faux-looting people are littering yourselves with the theory "oh, well" I'll blame it on a redneck. Take your ashy white, never seen the sun, complaining, carping, whiney behinds with your high-faux-looting ways back to the trashy neighboorhoods up north. Some of the nastiest places in the world are NYC, and the whole state of Jersey both are breeding grounds for cockroaches, wharf rats, bed bugs, chinch mites, skin mites and low life people. And oh yeah, don't forget the outskirts of the multi-million dollar mansions in the New England states.

Comment Title: Litter In Hirchcock Woods
I agree with the person who wrote about the litter in Hitchcock Woods. But it's not only there. Go take a walk around Carolina Bay next to the Odell Weeks Center and you will find the same thing. It is just ashamed that people can be so disrespectful and inconsiderate of the environment and everyone in general. This is just people who are raised to have absolutely no self-respect. But, actions speak louder than words. Just do what I do. When I take a walk in Hitchcock Woods, Carolina Bay, or the park I usually take along a plastic bag and pick up litter along the way. Not only do I get exercise by walking but also by bending up and down picking up the litter.

I've lived here 40 years, and I find, for the most part, Aiken and it's people very nice. I've seen alot of changes. You could walk to school with no worries. Volence was fist fighting, no knives, no guns. You could walk or ride yourbike and felt safe. I have to back up, I remember being @ Schofield when a guy named Marshall DID bring a gun in the 70's, saw it with my own eyes and he used it in the commons area, thank God everyone was in class.Does anyone remember Mr Quik Burger on Richland Ave? I remember wishing they'd bring a McDonalds to the southside, and now it's so overgrown, I hate to go there. Yeah, so much much for memories & progress

People in this town would rather be dirt farmers than to have to deal with a bunch of hatchet faced, rude; obnoxious, misrable, pieces of northern garbage that move to the south to "escape" every day.

Comment Title: tired
I am so sick of hearing anti yankee sentiments. No wonder Southerners are considered ignorant! Wake up...we re Americans. The civil war ended long ago, deal with it. If there were no yankees here we would be living as dirt farmers!
