S.C., N.C. almost finished with work on new border

COLUMBIA (AP) -- Officials in North Carolina and South Carolina will know later this year where the two states separate as they finish 18 years of work to re-establish the boundary.

The State newspaper reported that their work could give scores of homeowners in both states new addresses, driver's licenses and school districts.

South Carolina and North Carolina have worked quietly since 1994 on resurveying their border. To avoid having to get congressional approval of the border, which would cost more, the states retraced their original boundary from the 1700s.

As the field work ends, the political work is just beginning.

Last fall, officials sent letters to 93 property owners, notifying them that they could be affected by the new survey. About 30 replied with letters of concern.
