'What do you think?' for July 22: Blue laws
Should Aiken County Council suspend the blue laws?
Prior to Aiken County Council's meeting Tuesday night to consider suspending the blue laws, which restrict sales of certain items before 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, the Aiken Standard asked some of your friends and neighbors what they thought.
I think the stores should be open earlier, at least in case you are going out of town on Sunday and forget something. - Diana Clark
I think they are antiquated and need to be gotten rid of. We are not living in the 19th century; we are in the 21st. - Marne Clark
I'm against the blue laws. I just think it's inconvenient first of all if you want something. I think it is too much of an interference on people's lives. - Jay Clifton
I work Sunday morning from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. so it doesn't affect me. - Brad DiFranco
I think they should get rid of the blue laws. It's anti-business. You should be able to buy things before 1:30 p.m. It would allow the city and the state to collect more sales revenue. - Taryn Hartnett
I would like them to be repealed. I think there is already a law that says you can't work on Sunday if you don't want to, but if you want to then it's fine. On the way home from church, I would like to be able to stop into a store. - Carolyn Heffner
I see their purpose, but I don't see their purpose being fulfilled. They should give out special licenses to make tax money. It also seems sort of stupid that you can only buy food. Zoning also messes with the blue laws. - Jeremy Hupp
I appreciate the fact that you can buy beer on Sundays. I also respect the blue laws, because they allow people to go to church. - Derrick McLane
I'm against them. I don't think it's right that the government can tell me when to buy something. If I need diapers on a Sunday morning and I go to Wal-Mart, I can't buy them. - Anita Padgett
I think they need to go away. People need to have the right, even after church, to go to a restaurant or go to the store. - Devin Simpson
I think they should be removed. They cost residents time, because for example, you can't start a home project on a Sunday. - Diana Crowley
I don't have a strong opinion, but it would be OK if they were repealed. People should be able to go to church and then go shopping. - Mary Lou Dishop
