Colvin starting year off well in Triple-A

  • Saturday, April 20, 2013

Though Tyler Colvin was sent down to Triple-A for the start of the year, the former North Augusta Yellow Jacket and Clemson Tiger has started the year off well. In spring training, Colvin hit .167 and struck out 14 times in 46 at-bats. His demotion gave room for Reid Brignac and Jonathan Herrera to make the roster. Colvin had spent time last year playing all of the outfield positions and first base in the majors. Currently, the Rockies have one backup outfielder, Eric Young Jr., behind starters Carlos Gonzalez, Dexter Fowler and Michael Cuddyer. Todd Helton also entered his 17th season in the majors and will serve as the team's first baseman once again. For the Colorado Spring Sky Sox, Colvin already has gone yard three times to lead the team in homers. His only three RBIs have come from driving himself in, but he is batting .276 so far. Strangely enough, he has one triple and no doubles so far. His .999 OPS puts him third on the team behind third baseman Nolan Arenado (1.340) and left fielder Corey Dickerson (1.064). One area that could use improvement is his strikeouts - he currently has six in 29 at-bats versus three walks.Colvin has seen most of his playing time come from being in right field. Before the season began, there were multiple rumors that the New York Yankees could have an interest in Colvin. He likely would have filled in for the injured Mark Teixeira at first base.
Colvin would likely be the first in line for a call-up should there be an injury to any outfielder or Helton.
