They took a few days off this month, while much of the Central Savannah River Area was focused on a popular golf tournament in Augusta, but Stan Johnson and his employees are back on the job this week, turning their attention back to gold, silver, diamonds and the like.
Stan Johnson Jewelers, in Belvedere, dates back to 1982, when it was founded by Bill Johnson, the current namesake’s dad. The current owner bought it in 1997, keeping the business in the family.
Focal points include "some estate jewelry, a lot of new jewelry and engagement rings," Johnson said. Repairs and custom creations also are a part of the mix.
"We pay more for gold, silver and diamonds pre-owned things than anyone else in town. People have come from as far away as Statesboro to sell us jewelry, because we pay more."
These days, the staff includes Emily Welborn and Claire Hancock, along with Johnson’s wife, Rebecca, also helping out on occasion.
"I think people would be surprised to learn how much time and detail goes into all the different repairs and custom work that we do," Hancock said.
"Custom work," Johnson said, is a reference to such situations as if "you had a ring and you wanted to add diamonds to it, or wanted to add some color to an engagement ring."
"We sell a lot of ... refurbished ... Rolex ladies’ and men’s watches," he said, adding, "Our diamond prices are near wholesale."
Johnson’s operation is at 605-A Edgefield Road, next to Manly Auto Collision.
