A North Augusta man was arrested and jailed Wednesday on a charge of third-degree arson, in connection with a fire that did substantial damage to the house where he lived, at 1005 Thurmond Street, according to a report from the North Augusta Department of Public Safety. No one was injured.
The suspect, Donald Allen Ginn, 29, was located after a white male approached a responding officer and reported having been told, by the owner of the house, "That house is possessed, I poured a gallon of gasoline on it and set it on fire."
Dispatchers were notified of the fire at 11:18 a.m. Officers searched the area, near North Augusta Middle School, for someone matching the description of the man who made the comment. Ginn was found walking toward Old Edgefield Road and taken into custody. He then waived his right to remain silent and agreed to talk with investigators, the report said. Damage to the house was estimated at $100,000.
