Portion of U.S. 278 in SRS to reopen
The portion of U.S. 278 on the Savannah River Site that has been closed since Monday for bridge repairs is expected to reopen to traffic mid-morning today, if it is determined that the repair work was successful after 24 hours of monitoring.
SCDOT crews closed the bridge on Upper Three Runs Creek on Monday to cap off a boring hole that was under artesian pressure near the bridge following a water leak on Feb. 14 that occurred when soil samples were being taken at the site.
Resident construction engineer for Aiken County Jeff Terry said Tuesday morning that the repair work was completed, but would be monitored until Wednesday morning to ensure that the bridge is safe for traffic.
