LETTER: The kindness of strangers gratifying
On Thursday morning I got a flat tire. I didn't realize it, but the two men in the car behind me did. They saw me pull into the Dunkin Donuts parking lot on Richland Avenue and followed me. They took time out of their day, not only to make sure that I knew I had a flat tire, but they also offered to change it for me. This was no easy task because my car was relatively new and we discovered that Honda places tire changing equipment all over the car.
When they were done, I thanked them and offered them money. I offered them lunch. I offered them coffee and donuts. They refused to take anything. Actually, they asked me to buy lunch for a homeless person - pay it forward. Unfortunately, I did not get their names. All I know is that they work for Aiken Regional. I was so impressed with these men that I wrote a check for Golden Harvest (for substantially more than I would have tipped them) and drove it right over to the food bank. These two men acted the way human beings who live in a society should act - respecting and looking out for one another. Their selfless act inspired me to be a better person. Imagine how this could snowball!
