TalkBack: Semper Fi, gun control and Steven Tyler

Great job

Thanks to the Aiken Standard for the great article about the Aiken High School rifle team going to nationals. Unfortunately, they were involved in an accident on the way there. The Aiken Standard also covered that story, which was a great relief as it provided the facts of the accident. Also, thanks to the commander, as I'm sure it was a harrowing experience.

Semper Fi

Thanks to whoever sent in the information about where to get the Marine Corp car decal. It was good information, and I appreciate it. Semper Fi.

Inappropriate

In reference to "Ticket Bicyclists" appearing in Wednesday's TalkBack column, I agree bicyclists should adhere to the same rules of the road as motorists, but to say that by not doing so they "deserve to be hit by cars" is pure ignorance. In light of the recent death of a bicyclist on Banks Mill Road, I think publication of this opinion is insensitive and inappropriate.

What gun control?

About gun control: Let's face it, there is no gun control. Once a gun is bought and it's out there, who knows where it ends up.

Steven Tyler

I think Steven Tyler did a fantastic job with the anthem. He sang it the way only Steven would, and that was just right. He didn't pretend to be something he isn't. By the way, I fly my American Flag every day, have a sergeant in the Aiken County Sheriff's Department and a son who is a captain in the Army. I saw a lot of flags around right after Sept. 11. Were you all just pretending? Steven wasn't. By the way, I don't care much for horse people being next door either; they are allowed too many horses per acre, but I do respect them because they don't hide either.

Charter schools

To the person who said the teachers of charter schools should not be a part of the state retirement system, I would like you to know that charter schools are, in fact, state-funded public schools. Seven percent of my pay is deducted every month to be contributed to the system. So, yes, I should be a part of the system.
