LETTER: Obama has been a good president
I read Gail Jarvis' column with sadness as she complained that there is not "...a single economic indicator that hasn't worsened during Obama's presidency." She laments the uninformed citizen, yet offers little to alleviate the condition. The present administration has a long list of accomplishments.
Since elected, Obama has signed into law the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. New health insurance plans now cover women's preventative services. The Global Gag Rule which banned the government from providing aid to international family planning groups has been reversed.
Insurers now can't from deny coverage for preexisting conditions or cancel coverage when someone gets sick. Insurance companies must now justify rate hikes and provide rebates if they don't spend at least 80 percent of consumers' premiums. There are 32 million more Americans able to afford insurance for the first time and nearly all Americans will have insurance.
The economic recovery plan has had more than 23 months of job creation. The auto industry was saved from collapse, preventing the loss of more than 1.4 million jobs. Billions of dollars in subsidies to banks for college loans was cut and the savings used to double funding for Pell grants. He passed Wall Street reform to protect American families from unfair lending practices prevent future financial crises. He called for closing tax loopholes to ensure the very rich do not pay less in taxes than the middle class.
Voters are aware of Obama's foreign policy accomplishments. We celebrate his commitment to women and families, his record on health care, his efforts to put Americans back to work and rebuild a fair economy - an economy built to last - and ending wars and honoring our veterans, and much more. Just imagine what will happen if voters return President Obama to office for four additional years.
