LETTER: Some ideas about littering
After many comments in Talkback about littering as well as an article about the effects of litter on local wildlife, I would like to point out a few things.
1. Personal responsibility: Why do so many refuse to show responsibility by littering? If you don't want garbage thrown around your neighborhood, why put it in someone else's.
2. Prisoners: Inmates can help clean up the roads, but, they are not in jail to serve as maids for everyone else. Our jails are not forced labor camps.
3. Litter crew: There is one crew that does litter detail on nearly 1,000 miles of roadway in Aiken County. Do the math and figure out how long it would take them to cover the county even at 10 to 12 miles per day.
4. Most Aiken County residents, indeed most South Carolinians, identify as Christians who believe God created the Earth. Why would they disrespect him by trashing his creation and harming the wildlife he created? Or, are they not what they profess to be? Actions speak louder than words.
5. Businesses visiting Aiken County may well be disgusted by the way we treat our environment and choose not to locate new facilities here. Why should they be interested in a workforce with no pride in the appearance of their community?
It takes everyone to have clean roads. Don't litter and teach others to stop littering.
