Pair are keeping Pacers on point
It's not often that two players at the same position are the top two scorers on a team. However, the USC Aiken men's basketball team has that luxury, which has led it to being one of the top teams in the Peach Belt Conference's East Division.
Junior guard Re'mon Nelson and senior guard Sterling Council are both averaging more than 11 points per game. The two have different styles, which pleases head coach Vince Alexander.
"It is really nice having both of those guys on the team," Alexander said. "Sterling is more calm and controlled, (Nelson) is always on the go full speed, and there is a time for both styles in the game."
Both Nelson and Council have come up big for the Pacers this season. Each has been the team's leading scorer in five games this year. They recognize their own strengths, as well as those of their teammates, which is one reason Nelson believes he has been successful.
"I don't really worry about the scoring stats; I just like to push the ball up the floor, and the scoring is a result of that," Nelson said.
Nelson, who also leads the team in assists, likes to get his teammates in on the scoring action as much as possible.
"We have such talented post players that it makes scoring easier," Nelson said "Also, we have 3-point shooters, and Sterling is deadly from mid-range."
Council's mid-range game has come in handy for the Pacers several times over the past four years. He and Nelson are considered among the veterans on a relatively new team this season. Nine players on the Pacers' current roster weren't a on the team last season.
Council said he hopes the effort he puts forth is a positive example for his teammates.
"Being a senior on the team is a big responsibility," Council said. "I try to lead by example both on and off the court."
According to coach Alexander, the example the two players set is exemplary. He described both as committed and hard working. He added that their talent makes them a "joy to coach," and their lifestyle is a positive as well.
"The most important thing about them is they are just good individuals," Alexander said.
The two are looking to lead the Pacers deep into the postseason this year.
