Police probe suspicious fire at murder suspect's home
Officials are investigating a suspicious fire at the residence of a New Ellenton murder suspect who was arrested in Georgia last week and is awaiting extradition back to South Carolina, officials said.
Christopher Nathaniel Parker, 24, has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, said Aiken County Sheriff's Office Capt. Troy Elwell.
He has been accused of shooting 18-year-old Huran Akil Dix and burying him in a wooded area off Dry Branch Road in Aiken on Jan. 27.
Several other suspects have been charged as accomplices.
It's been less than a week since his arrest in Pooler, Ga.
Early Tuesday, about 4 a.m., New Ellenton firefighters learned of a fire at a double-wide mobile home on Nondron Street.
Officials later learned the home was Parker's residence.
Fire Chief Mike Kellems said the home was fully engulfed in flames and was destroyed by the fire by the time they arrived.
No one was living at the residence, Kellems said.
New Ellenton police officers, with the aid of the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, assisted firefighters.
Troy Elwell said evidence will be sent to state agents for further investigation.
New Ellenton officers will make charges if there are any, he explained.
The authorities said the fire is suspicious but would not comment further.
