Chaney to speak at Legion reunion
Former shortstop Darrel Chaney, whose baseball career stretched throughout the 1970s with the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves, is to be the featured speaker at this year's Augusta American Legion baseball reunion banquet, set for Feb. 16.
Plans are for Chaney, also known for his radio and TV coverage of the Braves, to have some meet-and-greet time with the public before and after the banquet. Starting time is 6:30 p.m.
Legion baseball in Augusta included a variety of players from North Augusta, including Bob Bolton, Fuzzy Floyd, Rod Greenway, Frank Oakley, Johnny Bowen, Red Curtan, Lewis Jones and Jerry Priestley.
Traditional participants in the annual reunion include longtime North Augusta resident Lou Brissie, who overcome severe injuries in World War II to become a major-league pitcher, competing in the late '40s through the early '50s for the Philadelphia Athletics and Cleveland Indians.
The host site for this year's gathering is Legion Post 63, on Milledge Road, in Augusta.
