FCHS girls fall to Calhoun County
Kiana Greene's nine-point game led the way for Fox Creek High School in its Thursday contest against Calhoun County, but the visitors got 14 and 13 points, respectively, from Mauri Leonard and Brianna Charley, in the process of cruising to a 46-23 win.
Fox Creek's next action is to be today (Thursday) at Ridge Spring-Monetta and Friday at home against Hunter-Kinard-Tyler.
Against Calhoun County, Fox Creek went scoreless for nearly four minutes during a critical stretch at the start of the third quarter when the outcome was still in doubt.
The Predators (4-4) didn't know how to attack the Lady Saints' defense, and too often passed the ball back and forth around the perimeter before turning it over on a missed shot or a giveaway.
Calhoun County (7-2) was far from an offensive dynamo, but got enough easy baskets as the result of its full-court pressure to build a double-digit lead early in the second quarter and cruise the rest of the way.
Fox Creek's girls had begun the previous week on a winning note, squeaking out a 26-25 home win Tuesday over Blackville-Hilda. The victors were led by Dominique Moore, who scored 10 points, and Greene, who added nine.
The most recent rankings from the High School Sports Report have Timmonsville in the top spot among A-level teams. Following, in order, are Hemingway, Baptist Hill, C.E. Murray, McCormick, St. Joseph's, Ridgeland, Ware Shoals, Johnsonville and Ridge Spring-Monetta.
