As the winter season continues, Fox Creek has remained busy.
Girls' and boys' basketball seasons are well underway with the girls winning more than the guys at the time of this writing. The soccer coach begins full practices on Jan. 31 while the baseball coach, Wes Brown, and the softball coach, David Bell, are chomping at the bit to get started.
Prom is steadily approaching. Juniors and seniors are allowed to attend. It will be on Saturday, April 28, and the theme is Black and White Masquerade Ball. Prom committee has ordered invitations and is currently sending them out to seniors.
On Jan. 21, Walt Bagshaw, a Fox Creek senior, traveled to Sumter to compete in the regional level of Poetry Out Loud. He, along with 10 other Midlands students, memorized and recited poetry for a panel of judges. Walt was highly complimented by the judges for "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll. Though he did not place in the competition, his performance was cited as spectacular by the attending FC teacher, Nancy Cowart.
On Jan. 19 an army truck arrived at Fox Creek. Throughout the day students in groups were taken inside the truck to test out simulations of real-life weaponry used in the armed forces. Among them were a virtual practice range with moving targets (and a very heavy gun) and a shooting gallery where participants used a fake piston to shoot small, flying balls. Several soldiers were on hand to demonstrate the simulations and discuss their time in the military.
Every year, Mr. Warnken, Fox Creek's U.S. History teacher, allows his students the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C on a class trip. This year, sites the students will be visiting include Capitol Hill and the Spy Museum. The trip will be in March. To raise additional money for the trip, students who are going are selling Fox Creek t-shirts. The shirts are black and have FC/DC written in white. If you are interested in buying a shirt, contact MK Jenkins at Fox Creek High.
To raise money for their Disney World trip, Fox Creek seniors will be selling tickets for a chance to win a Movie Night at Home basket at the Miss Fox Creek pageant on February 4. The tickets will cost one dollar. Also, there will be a semi-formal Sweetheart Dance on Feb. 11 sponsored by the seniors along with the Prom Committee. The proceeds will go toward both the Senior Trip and prom committee.
Congratulations to teachers chosen by Teacher Cadets as CIA (Caught in the Act) winners so far this year: Mrs. Tammi Alan, Mrs. Ashley Stallings, Miss Meghan Woodruff. These are teachers who work quietly to do a lot for the school and for the students.
