St. Paul to hold Mardi Gras dinner, dance

The fourth annual Mardi Gras party on the river will be held on Friday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m.

There will be food, live music and dancing.

The Paul Roberts All Star Band returns to the River Room, 605 Reynolds St., Augusta, in response to popular demand.

The room will be decorated in Mardi Gras glitz and glamour for the occasion. Traditional New Orleans cuisine will be served.

All proceeds will aid those in the community who are unable to provide food security for themselves and their families.

St. Bart's to hold 'Messy Church' on Feb. 19

This month's "Messy Church" at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church is planned for Sunday, Feb. 19. The group will meet in the Ministry Center at 4:30 p.m.

The only requirement is for adults to bring a child and each child to bring an adult.

Grace UMC hosts Shrove Tuesday dinner

Grace United Methodist Men and the United Methodist Youth Fellowship will host a traditional pancake supper on Shrove Tuesday, the night before Lent begins.

The meal is set for Feb. 21 in the Wesley Center.

Then on Ash Wednesday, Grace will hold a service in the church sanctuary at 6:30 p.m. following the regular WINGS meal at 5:30 p.m.

Belvedere FBC to celebrate 90 years

Belvedere First Baptist Church will hold a 90th anniversary celebration on Sunday, Feb. 19.

The service begins at 10 a.m. instead of the usual 10:30 a.m.

The theme for the day is "Remembering the Past - Looking to the Future."

Guest preacher will be Dr. Jim Austin, executive director of S.C. Baptist Convention.

Following the service there will be a covered dish luncheon. The church will provide the main dish, and everyone else is asked to bring enough sides and bread to feed their family. The church will also provide a birthday cake for dessert.

St. Bartholomew's plans for Lent

St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church will begin Lent with a Shrove Tuesday dinner the night before. On Feb. 21 beginning at 5:30 p.m. the men and youth at St. Bart's will prepare the meal.

St. Bart's will then hold two services on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22. The traditional service is set for 10 a.m. and a child-friendly service at 6:30 p.m.

At 6 p.m. before the Ash Wednesday service, members of St. Bartholomew's will gather in the parish hall to make pretzels before the service. Pretzels were a traditional substitute for leavened bread during Lent and were often given out to the poor during that time.

In addition, the church will host Lent fish fries on three Fridays during Lent.

The first is set for Friday, Feb. 24, followed by March 9 and 23. The dinner time is 6 to 7 p.m.

During each dinner there are fried fish takeout plates available for $6.50 each. They include fried fish, fries, hush puppies and coleslaw.

A fish sandwich plate is $6.50 as well with the same sides.

Those who wish to eat-in can do so for $7.

Church members will also offer grits as a substitute for the fries.

Proceeds will go to missions and other St. Bart ministries.

'Some Enchanted Evening' coming up

Trinity on Laurens, the Lutheran senior community in downtown Aiken, will host its major fundraising event of the year, Some Enchanted Evening, on Friday, Feb. 24, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Aiken Center for the Arts. There will be food, spirits, music and a silent and live auction. Funds raised support Trinity's endowment, which helps Trinity offer a limited financial grant program to deserving residents.

Lydia Project cutting project

The Lydia Project will host a cutting day at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, Feb. 25, beginning at 9 a.m. in the fellowship hall.

Jobs include cutting bags, linings, tops and pockets; writing notes of encouragement; organizing packets as bag cuttings are completed; and possibly cutting purple handles.

The Lydia Project cutting day is combined with the normally scheduled Loaves and Fishes quilting day once every six weeks.

Italian Cafe returns to Holy Trinity

On Saturday evening, Feb. 25, the youth at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church will host the Italian Café.

This is a fundraising event for the upcoming ELCA National Youth Gathering which will be held in July in New Orleans.

The meal will consist of spaghetti with homemade sauces, lasagna and fettuccine, as well as a side salad, Italian bread, drinks and desserts.

'Camp-In' for kids at FBC
