Sports Hall of Fame banquet to be held
The 2012 North Augusta Sports Hall of Fame banquet is planned for this Saturday beginning with a reception at 6 p.m.
The recognition of this year's inductees into the Sports Hall of Fame will begin around 7:15 p.m., following a dinner.
In addition, an exhibit of the Sports Hall of Fame inductees will open Friday night from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Arts and Heritage Center of North Augusta.
This year's choices for induction in the Sports Hall of Fame are Jim Bush, Beth McKie Meyer, Sammy Twiggs and the entire 1961 North Augusta High School football team. This year's honorees will be introduced, respectively by Mayor Lark Jones, Ron McKie, Hap Greenway and Cally Gault (who will accept the award on behalf of the team).
In addition, there will be recognition of this year's Athletes of Distinction and a special tribute to Lou Brissie
This year's Athletes of Distinction include Scott Brown, a member of the PGA Tour; Ron Allen, North Augusta Parks and Recreation Department Volunteer Coach of the Year; Nicole Fuller, a State swimming champion; Colt Gross, a National Rifle Competition runner-up; Montez McGuire, player in the North South All Star Football Game; Bob Miller, a National Racquetball Champion; Vinny Miller, CSRA Football Player of the Year; Dan Pippin, North South All Star Coach; Derrick Quinn, State All Star Coach; Sydney Seigler, All-State softball player; Evan Williams, Army football player.
In addition, the North Augusta Sports Commission has created the Lou Brissie Award. John Felak, chair of the Commission, explained the award is "to honor an individual who has made a significant contribution to our community, yet does not qualify as an inductee. We are proud to have selected Lou Brissie as our first recipient."
The Hall of Fame selection committee included Chairman Tommy Degenarro, Hap Greenway, Craig Lamar, Leo Boehmer, Jon Williams and Dick Day.
The North Augusta Sports Commission includes John Felak, Richard Fletcher, Mike Flippo, Ken Franklin and Rick Thomas.
