NAMS Jackets fall to Schofield
Willie McCloud, Jordan Blocker and their North Augusta Middle School teammates went to the brink of the county football championship Oct. 21, but Schofield Middle School slipped past the Yellow Jackets in overtime at Lions Field, winning 20-14, with the decisive play being Caleb Heath's 25-yard pass to Nakeem Spann.
The Rams (6-1) avenged their only loss of the season, having been nipped by the Yellow Jackets (5-1).
"We were certainly the decided underdog today, having lost to them, and you can see what great-looking athletes they have there," said Bill McKnight, Schofield's coach, "but we've got a bunch of guys who won't quit."
Schofield stopped North Augusta in the first set of overtime plays, setting the stage for the clincher. The Jackets had built a 14-8 lead by halftime, but Schofield scored late in the third quarter to tie things up, and both teams' drives fell flat in the fourth frame.
Despite the title game having been played, the Jackets still faced one more game coming into this week. Because of concerns about weather and field conditions, their Oct. 15 game against Paul Knox was rescheduled for Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m., with North Augusta High School as the host site.
