Sheridan to become part of Hall of Fame
Lee Sheridan is among the primary figures to be honored in January at the North Augusta Sports Hall of Fame's induction banquet. The Sumter native began his broadcasting career in 1947 following graduation from high school.
He started with WFIG-TV in his hometown and moved on to work in Augusta and Chattanooga, Tenn., sharpening his sports skills by doing play-by-play and a variety of interviews, along with various announcing duties.
He accepted a position as staff announcer at WRDW-TV in 1956 - a position proved to be a springboard into his specializing in sports.
Since polio had halted his own dream of a sports career, he lived that dream by promoting and supporting young athletes.
He also took pride in participating in community interests, such as serving as a president of the Greater North Augusta Chamber of Commerce during the campaign to build North Augusta High School's football stadium.
Along the way, he also served as a president of the local chapter of AUSA (Association Of the United States Army) and as a board member of the Georgia Association of Broadcasters, CSRA Business League, Augusta Training Shop for the Handicapped, Salvation Army, Easter Seals, the Cancer Society and Augusta Better Business Bureau.
Sheridan is a recipient of the Louis Harris Award honoring excellence in media work, presented by the Augusta West Rotary Club.
While continuing his interest and participation in television sports, Sheridan found time to grow in his profession.
He went from operations manager at WRDW-TV to general manager at WATU-TV (now WAGT-TV).
He retired in 1991 as station manager of WAGT-TV. He and his wife, Harriett, have four children: Danny, Marjorie, Pat and Keith.
