Jackets make comeback
Hundreds of local football fans got a look at Aiken County's most prominent teams Friday evening by way of the annual jamboree, and North Augusta High School quarterback Loranzo Hammonds provided a major portion of the fireworks, as his squad grabbed a 14-10 comeback win against Silver Bluff in an 18-minute scrimmage.
The Yellow Jackets, whose first game of the season is to be Aug. 27 at home against Midland Valley, found themselves in a 10-7 hole with 50 seconds left to play. The Bulldogs had assembled two long scoring drives, culminating the second one with a 27-yard field goal from Pedro Zambrano.
Hammonds got the ball on his own 30-yard line and wasted no time. He completed a pass for 18 yards then gained six more yards with his feet before running out of bounds to stop the clock.
On the next play, Hammonds hit Jessie Pernell for a 29-yard gain and rushed his team to the line of scrimmage at the 17-yard line, spiking the ball to stop the clock. With less than five seconds remaining, the Jackets only had time for one play, and it had to be a shot at the end zone.
That's exactly what Hammonds delivered.
After evading the Bulldogs' pass rush, a scrambling Hammonds connected with Jaylon Myers for the game-winning score with no time remaining on the clock.
Dan Pippin, North Augusta's head coach, wasn't pleased with much of his team's execution in spite of the gutsy win.
"It wasn't what I wanted to see. I couldn't fault our kids' effort, but we have to play better," Pippin said. "We have a lot of playmakers. I was happy with how we responded on that last drive."
Hammonds completed six of seven passes - the lone incompletion being the clock-killing spike - gaining 116 yards and the game-winning touchdown. He also rushed for 16 yards and a touchdown on two carries. Overall, North Augusta only ran 12 plays on offense, compared to 29 for Silver Bluff.
Pestering the Jacket defense was Andre Washington, who had 12 carries for 30 yards and scored Silver Bluff's touchdown on a 1-yard plunge. Bulldog quarterback Cordrea Tankersley had eight carries for 45 yards and completed two passes for 46 yards.
"The biggest thing now is beating Midland Valley," said Pippin, referring to a squad that he has beaten in each of his four years as the Jackets' head coach. "We're not looking past that game."
