Munie is poetry contest winner

Stephanie Munie, a North Augusta resident in the fifth grade at St. Mary on the Hill School, won first place in the elementary-school level in the poetry division of the eighth annual Combining Voices literary competition, sponsored by the Morris Museum of Art.
Her poem, entitled "The Old Days on the Farm," was inspired by "Hide and Seek," a painting by Bessie Nickens. The contest's rules called for students to write a poem or short story based on one of five selected paintings in the museum.
Winners were recognized with a cash prize and certificate, along with an invitation to read their winning entries for the audience at the awards ceremony.
The ceremony, in turn, included an opportunity for guests to have refreshments and a look at the artwork that inspired the students' creations.
