The Bee's buzz

We are the World

What did you think of diversity day? Well, I think it was a lot of fun. We learned a lot of interesting information.

One of the teachers at our school is from Vietnam, Mrs. Uyen Griffis. You pronounce her name like "you win." She told us a lot of interesting facts about her country. For example, did you know that one U.S. dollar is equal to 15,000 dong in Vietnam? I know! It's amazing! I also learned that "cam'on" means "thank you" in the Vietnamese language. She said that it takes 23 hours on a plane just to get from Vietnam to America! That's a long time! Plus she said that kids in Vietnam had to go to school six days a week - this means they have school on Saturday!

Another speaker was our district superintendent, Mrs. Rosie Berry. She told us that she had six uncles that fought in World War II. They all came back too! She said that most of her family members have either been teachers or preachers. Then she read us an amazing story about an eagle who thought he was a chicken until he spread his wings and soared into the skies, teaching us to never forget who we are or to let others bring us down.

To end the program, my friends and I sang "We Are the World" by Michael Jackson for our guests. It was great because everyone came together and sang as one. I thought I sang pretty good as well.
